Counselor In Training Program

The CIT ( Counselor -In-Training) program is a 4 year program consisting of one or more weeks at camp per year. Teens actively participate in a low ropes team building course, teach classes, and provide peer leadership to younger campers. The goal is to prepare teens for employment, give experience as camp counselors, provide general leadership training and develop basic skills useful in any job situation. A number of our staff have participated in the CIT program as campers.

CIT's are supervised by the CIT coordinator, who in turn coordinates and plans their program. Camp staff have a responsibility to help CIT's develop teaching and planning skills. CIT's are evaluated throughout the program by their peers, the CIT Coordinator, staff and are required to complete a self evaluation at the end of their week.

Participants must be 14 years old or older, and enjoy leadership roles, interacting with youth and working in an outdoor setting. The CIT is recognized as a teen camper with leadership potential and is treated as such.

In order to facilitate a more individualized program which emphasizes team building and group dynamics skills, CIT I's and CIT II's are invited to participate in one of the following sessions:
CIT I sessions - Weeks 2 or 3
CIT II Sessions - Weeks 1
CIT III Sessions - Weeks 1-6.

Those campers invited into the CIT III program must make a two week commitment to camp sometime throughout the camping season, weeks 1-6. The CIT III will be assigned a week in the summer by the CIT Coordinator and Camp Director, based upon enrollment and the needs of the camp.

Senior CIT's must be 17 years of age and have completed the 3 year training program or be invited at the discretion of the Camp Director. Two weeks room and board are provided.

Completion of the CIT program does not automatically guarantee a camp counselor job at 4-H Camp Sacandaga.
